93 Reade Street, New York
Facade
- Description: Cast-iron facade of the former Millers Falls Company office in the hardware district. The building is typical of its type in that the remainder of the structure is fabricated from standard building materials. Its five-story height represents the generally accepted maximum for structures built in an era before elevators were the norm. Although the heyday of cast-iron buildings lasted from about 1850 to 1910, they were never really commonplace. The increased use of steel in building construction and changing ideas about ornamentation sounded the death knell for cast-iron facades.
